Number of re-offenses

Why is This Important?

Tracking the number of re-offenses is essential for understanding the effectiveness of the Pre-Trial Services Program in promoting public safety. When defendants successfully complete supervision without committing new offenses, it demonstrates that alternatives to detention can work while reducing jail overcrowding and associated costs.

What Does It Mean?

In Q1 2026, 577 total cases were filed. Of the 577 total cases, 537 cases resulted in no new filings. The remaining 40 cases did result in a new filing. Therefore, there were 40 total re-offenses in Q1 2026.

Definition

Arapahoe County provides judicial services programs through the Community Resources Department. The pre-trial program allows eligible defendants, while their cases are pending adjudication, to remain in the community under court-ordered supervision and conditions in lieu of pretrial detention.

This program tracks the number of cases closed with no new filings. This refers to to the total number of closed cases in which the defendant was released from custody, was supervised by the program, and was not charged with a new criminal offense that was alleged to have occurred while under supervision and that carried the possibility of a sentence to jail or imprisonment. This number excludes cases for which jail or imprisonment is not a possible sentence. No new charge refers to the absence of new cases of any kind filed with the state's county or district courts, regardless of whether it began with a jail booking or a summons.

The number of re-offenses measures demonstrates the inverse to this measure by showing those cases which did result in a re-offense.
