Why is This Important?

Roadways are an essential County asset that directly affects commerce, the safe travel of residents, and ultimately the quality of life for those who work, live, and play in Arapahoe County.  Roadways also have the largest amount of escalating repair costs because of delayed maintenance.

What Does It Mean?

In 2025, continual new growth within the County added new roadway infrastructure that has increased the percent of roads in the excellent condition: however, it also contributed to rising long‑term maintenance needs. During this same period, the Arapahoe County paving crew achieved another record-breaking year in total miles of roadway repaved and is on track to further increase production in the coming years.

Despite improvements in the proportion of roads rated excellent and the increase in maintenance activity, the County has not yet met its target of maintaining 85% of roadways in excellent, good, or fair condition. Additionally, the most costly repair category—roadways rated “very poor”—rose again in 2025.

With the increase in funding provided by the 1‑A ballot measure beginning in 2026, the Road & Bridge Division anticipates another highly successful paving year and will introduce several new pavement maintenance programs. These programs are expected to positively impact overall road conditions across all categories, contributing to a new sustained upward trend in roadway quality.

Paved roadways in unincorporated Arapahoe County are routinely evaluated and given a numerical value from 1-100. This value is reduced based on the number of deficiencies like potholes, cracks, and the age of the road. A score of 100 represents a brand new road in perfect condition, while a zero requires completely rebuilding the roadway. The entire roadway network is then grouped into categories and classified as being Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor, or Very Poor condition.
