Mental Health Contributing Measures

These measures reflect data as of Q4-22.

Poor Mental Health

Percent of adults with poor mental health (14+ poor mental health days in the past 30 days).

No more than 11.9% of adults with poor mental health.

The goal for the percentage of adults with poor mental health is to remain below the target – exceeding the target would signify more adults with poor mental health. This measure component increased from 12.13% in 2019 to 13.23% in 2020. The target for this measure component was 11.90% resulting is a yellow status contributing 0.5 points to the overall measure score. Given the COVID-19 pandemic and its many impacts, it is not surprising that self-reported poor mental health increased in 2020.

Adolescent Suicide

Percent of adolescents who attempted suicide in the past year.

7.22% of adolescents who attempted suicide in the past year.

The goal for the percentage of adolescents attempting suicide is to remain below the target – exceeding the target would signify more adolescents attempting suicide. Data for this measure come from the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey – which is only conducted every other year; therefore, the component remained the same from 2019 to 2020. However, 8.1% exceeds the target of 7.22% resulting in a yellow status. This measure component contributes 0.5 points to the overall measure score. This indicator is self-reported by students; it is possible that 8.1% underestimates the true percentage of high-school-aged youth that attempted suicide in 2020.

Suicide Death Rate

Number of people who died due to suicide per 100,000 persons.

17.73 suicides per 100,000 population.

The goal for the suicide death rate (per 100,000) is to remain below the target – exceeding the target would signify more people dying by suicide. In 2020, the suicide death rate decreased from 18.57 to 18.01 per 100,000. However, this still exceeds the measure component target of 17.73 deaths per 100,000 resulting in a yellow status and a contribution of 0.5 points to the overall measure score.

Drug Poisoning Death Rate

Number of people who died due to drug poisoning per 100,000 persons.

15.75 drug poisoning deaths per 100,000.

The goal for the drug poisoning death rate is to remain below the target – exceeding the target would signify more people dying by drug poisoning. In 2020, the drug poisoning death rate increased from 16.44 to 22.44 deaths per 100,000, exceeding the target of 15.75 per 100,000. This results in a red status for the measure component, and 0 points are contributed to the overall measure score.
